Preheat the oven to 180°C/ fan 160°C/ gas mark 4 then grease and line the baking tins.
Make up the Dr. Oetker Vanilla Cake Mix according to the packet instructions. In a separate bowl, make up the Dr. Oetker Chocolate Cake Mix in the same way.
Using two teaspoons, dollop the chocolate and vanilla cake mixes alternately into the tins. Once the base of the tin is covered, start a second layer. When placing dollops of mixture on top of one another try to alternate the flavours e.g. chocolate on top of vanilla and vice versa. The dollops of cake mixture will naturally blend in the tin. Spread the mixture equally across the 3 tins – as a guide you should have enough mixture to create 2-3 layers per tin.
To create a marble effect, drag a skewer back and forth in one continuous movement through the tins of mixture. Make sure the skewer is lightly touching the bottom of the tin so that you’re swirling all the way through the mix and not just the top.
Bake for 35-40 minutes until risen and firm to the touch. Cool in the tins for 10 minutes then turn on to wire racks to cool completely (this could take a couple of hours).
To decorate, trim away the top of 2 cakes to make them flat (you can keep the trimmings for truffles or cake pops). Cover the top of the 2 trimmed cakes with chocolate buttercream and stack them on top of each other. Place the untrimmed cake on top.
Generously spread chocolate buttercream round the sides of the whole cake and over the top. Carefully transfer the cake to a serving plate.
Enjoy a slice (or two) of your delicious homemade marble cake!
