Environmental Management from a Long Tradition

Clean water, pure air and healthy soils: The protection of the natural foundations of life is of the utmost importance to Dr. Oetker. Because that is the prerequisite for receiving high-quality raw materials and producing high-quality food from them.

At Dr. Oetker, an environmental management system that has been established for decades ensures that operational processes are designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The responsible employees of the Environmental Management department at Dr. Oetker are working on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by making energy savings. They also make sure that raw materials and packaging materials are used efficiently in all plants and ensure that the neighbors of the production sites are not affected by noises or smells.

Environmental management is organized centrally in Bielefeld. In addition, there are responsible persons in all national companies who take care of environmental protection on-site.


The following milestones are a short extract from our environmental chronicle:

  • As early as 1987 we at Dr. Oetker appointed the first, initially part-time environmental protection officer on a voluntary basis; this function has been full-time since 1990. 

  • In 1989 the first internal environmental audits laid the foundation for setting up an environmental organization at all German production sites. During this time, the Environment and Packaging working group was founded and the topic of environmental protection was integrated into the company's suggestion scheme.

  • The mid 1990s saw the first audits at foreign locations. This went hand-in-hand with the formulation of environmental guidelines and framework guidelines for organizing environmental protection for the entire Oetker Group.

  • In 1995 Dr. h.c. August Oetker was named Ecological Manager of the Year by the business magazine Capital together with the nature conservation organization WWF as a result of the company's extensive services and personal commitment.

  • In 1998 environmental protection at the two production sites in Bielefeld and Ettlingen was tested for the first time in accordance with the international environmental management standard ISO 14001 and found to be good. Today all five production sites in Germany and 23 of a total of 33 production sites worldwide are certified to ISO 14001.

  • Between 2007 and 2009 Dr. Oetker furthered the internationalization of the environmental management system with the aim of uniform certification. The locations in Eastern Europe, which were the first foreign companies to complete this project in 2007, were groundbreaking. With a kick-off meeting in Brazil in the same year, the starting shot was given for the numerous activities in other national companies that promoted the implementation of environmental standards by the end of 2009.

  • Since 2012 the German production sites have an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001.

  • In 2015 Dr. Oetker was awarded the environmental certification ├ľKOPROFIT┬«-company.
