Tools you will need
You can use a number of tools to grate chocolate, choosing the right one depends on the finish you are wanting:
- Micro plane or fine grater – for fine, fluffy chocolate shavings.
- Box grater (medium holes) – for thicker shreds, ideal for folding into batters.
- Vegetable peeler – for delicate Chocolate curls.
- Sharp knife and cutting board – for chopping chocolate into chunks.
Other equipment needed it
- Plate or parchment paper – to catch the chocolate while grating or shaving.
- Optional: cocoa powder to dust the grater and prevent sticking.
Method
1-Chill the chocolate slightly (15–20 mins in the fridge).
2-Hold the chocolate block at an angle to the grater.
3- Use short, gentle strokes to create even shavings.
4- Stop grating before the piece becomes too small to hold safely.
5- Use immediately for decoration, folding, or drinks.

The different chocolate will give you a different texture and flavour to the bake:
Dark chocolate: Hard, grates finely, bitter-sweet flavour.
Milk chocolate: Softer, sweeter, melts faster, easier for folding.
White chocolate: Soft, delicate, may clump, best for mild sweetness and visual contrast.

Grating: Produces fine, fluffy shavings that sprinkle easily on desserts or drinks.
Shaving: Creates larger, thin pieces or ribbons, often used for decorative purposes or chocolate curls.
Shaving to get the curl
1-Use a vegetable peeler on a firm chocolate block.
2- Hold the chocolate at a slight angle.
3- Apply gentle pressure to peel thin ribbons.
4- Chill the curls briefly to firm them if they soften too quickly.
5- Perfect for cake decorating or dessert garnish.
Keep It Chilled
Refrigerate or freeze the chocolate for about 15–20 minutes before grating. This helps prevent melting and makes it easier to handle. Avoid grating room-temperature chocolate, as it can become too soft and messy.
Use the Right Tool
A fine grater or microplane is best for fine shavings. A box grater (medium or coarse side) works well for larger flakes. A vegetable peeler can be used to create chocolate curls.
Handle with Care
Hold the chocolate with a piece of parchment paper or a kitchen towel to prevent it from melting in your hands. Grate slowly and evenly to avoid breakage.
Work Over a Surface
Grate chocolate directly onto parchment paper or a cool plate to make transferring easier. If you're topping a dessert, grate directly over it for a fresh finish.
Store Properly
If you're not using it immediately, store grated chocolate in an airtight container in the fridge to prevent clumping or melting.
Can I grate chocolate that’s too soft?
It’s tricky—soft chocolate can clump or melt while grating. Chill it in the fridge for 15–20 minutes first.
How do I prevent chocolate from sticking to the grater?
Always make sure that you chill the chocolate before grating. And lightly dusting the grater with cocoa powder for milk or white chocolate.
Can I grate chocolate directly over a dessert?
Yes, but do it just before serving—chocolate melts quickly and may lose its texture.
How should I store grated chocolate?
You should use immediately if possible. If storing, keep in an airtight container in the fridge and bring to room temperature before using.
Can I grate chocolate for melting?
It’s better to chop chocolate into small even chunks for melting. Grated chocolate melts too fast and can burn.
Now you're ready to add beautifully grated chocolate to cakes, desserts, and drinks!
